In an Avalanche Skills Training 1, you’ll learn how to recognize avalanche terrain, understand the avalanche forecast, plan your trips, and perform a companion rescue. Avalanche Canada Training courses are the national standard for recreational avalanche training. The courses are designed by Avalanche Canada to suit the needs of recreationists and delivered by independent third-party providers, who are licensed by Avalanche Canada.
Do you venture out of bounds, off the trails, or into the backcountry? An AST 1 is your place to start. You don't need any experience to take this course, but it is a must for everyone recreating in the backcountry.
What you will learn:
Avalanche formation and release.
How to identify avalanche terrain.
The basics of trip planning.
How to use the avalanche forecast to mitigate your avalanche risk.
Using appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain.
Intro to companion rescue.

Where does the course take place?
The course will take place at Out East Adventures in Rocky Harbour. There is a hostel in the building and it works well to stay there for the course. Please book at outeastadventures.com if you are interested. . Places to stay and eat are slim at that time of year. I recommend staying Friday night if possible to avoid driving early on Saturday. Outdoor sessions are in Gros Morne national park. please have a park pass.
Course
Day 1 will be indoor/outdoor from 9-5 with an evening session if desired. (Please bring a lunch)
Day 2 will be in the field. (Location and time will be decided during course) (plan for full day)
Equipment
Pen and paper
Alpine touring skis or split-board/Skins, snow shoes
Back pack
Transceiver, Probe, Shovel
Helmet, goggles, toque, sunglasses, headlamp
Good layering system for back country travel.
Food and drink for both days
